Canada has a long history of welcoming immigrants from all around the world, making it one of the most diverse and multicultural countries in the world. As a land of opportunities, Canada has become a popular destination for immigrants seeking a better life, with a strong economy, high standard of living, and numerous social benefits.
Over the years, Canada has established various immigration programs that allow people from different backgrounds to immigrate to the country, whether as skilled workers, students, entrepreneurs, or refugees. These programs are designed to help individuals and families settle and integrate into Canadian society, while also contributing to the country’s economic and social growth.
Five new engineering occupations that are in need of workers have been identified by Canada.Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) increased the number of professions eligible for the Global Talent Stream last week (GTS).
What is GTS?
The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a Canadian immigration program that helps Canadian employers attract and hire highly skilled foreign workers to fill critical talent gaps in the Canadian labor market. The GTS is part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and allows eligible employers to hire foreign workers in designated occupations within two weeks, significantly reducing processing times for work permits.
Previously, the GTS programme was open to 12 in-demand professions in Canada that were experiencing a labour shortage. The list of eligible occupations has now grown to 17, with the addition of five engineering roles, with the most recent expansion.
The 5 new occupations added to the Global Talent Stream on December 22nd are:
- NOC code 21300 – Civil Engineers.
- NOC code 21310 – Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
- NOC code 21330 – Mining Engineers.
- NOC code 21390 – Aerospace Engineers.
- NOC code 21311 – Computer Engineers (except Software Engineers and Designers).
The addition of these five new positions to the GTS list demonstrates the need for engineering labour in Canada. The country has been experiencing a shortage of skilled workers in a variety of fields, and the government is working to address this issue. The GTS programme is just one of many initiatives launched by the Canadian government to address labour shortages in specific industries.
New exemption from having to obtain a work permit under GTS:
- Highly skilled workers in NOC occupations with a skill type of 0 or level of A are eligible to enter Canada without a work permit for up to 15 days every six months or 30 days every year.
- Researchers may enter Canada for up to 120 days in a calendar year without a work permit if they are engaged in research projects at a publicly funded degree-granting institution or an affiliated research institution.
Given that the country has already identified immigration as a way to meet in-demand labour market needs in a post-COVID world, it appears likely that Canada will continue to address its economic needs in a much more targeted manner. Canada continues to face high labour market demands and an ageing population.
