How to apply for proof of Canadian citizenship

11Mar

Overview

Canadian citizenship is becoming even more valuable amid growing uncertainty around the world. The pandemic has disrupted all facets of our lives and there is great political uncertainty in developed and developing countries alike. Acquiring Canadian citizenship offers a variety of benefits including being able to live and work in one of the world’s best and most stable countries. You are able to raise your family in a country that offers universal healthcare, high quality education, a stable political and financial environment, great job opportunities, among a host of many other benefits. Being a citizen gives you access to a Canadian passport which allows you to pursue visa free travel to 185 countries.

To enjoy the benefits of citizenship, such as having a Canadian passport, working in Canada or voting in Canadian elections, you must apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate.

The Canadian citizenship certificate is the standardized document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that provides definitive proof that you are a citizen of the country. Along with the Canadian birth certificate, it is one of only two documents accepted by Passport Canada as proof of Canadian citizenship.

You may apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate for yourself if you were born outside of Canada and you have a Canadian parent.

You may also apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate for your children if at least one of their parents (legal parent at birth or biological parent) was born in Canada or naturalized as a Canadian citizen before their birth. However, if your child is adopted and was born outside of Canada, he or she is not automatically a Canadian citizen.

Eligibility:

You should apply if you want to

  • pass down your Canadian citizenship to your child who was born outside Canada
  • provide a document that proves your Canadian citizenship (such as to apply for a passport, job, pension, social insurance number, etc.)
  • make sure that you’re a Canadian citizen
  • replace a lost, destroyed or stolen certificate
  • update your certificate, such as when you get a legal name change

How to apply?

To apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate, you must download an application package available on IRCC’s website. You are required to complete the application form in its entirety and submit it with the required supporting documents. You can submit the application online on IRCC’s website.
