What is New Zealand visitor’s visa?
A New Zealand Visa also referred to as a New Zealand ‘visitor’s visa’, is a document that is placed in your passport and used to enter or re-enter New Zealand. The visa can be viewed as having valid permission to enter New Zealand for tourism, business or transit purpose.
With effect from 1st October 2019, people travelling to New Zealand need to apply for the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)
New Zealand visitor visa: An overview
- Visit friends and family, explore New Zealand or enjoy amateur sports, or adventure activity.
- Study for up to 3 months.
- Include your partner, and dependent children aged 19 and under, in your visa application.

Who need to apply?
You need to take visitor visa if:
- You are not travelling on a passport from a visa-waiver country or territory
- Want to visit for more than 3 months (or 6 months if you’re from the UK)
- Have a criminal history
- Have health problems that could be a danger to public health or be expensive for NZ’s health services.
You need an NZeTA if you’re travelling on a passport from a visa-waiver country
List of Documents required for New Zealand Visitor Visa:
- Original Passport with at least 6 months validity and minimum 3 blank pages + all old passports if any.
- Visa Application form
- 2 recent colour photographs (Photo Specification)
- Personal Covering letter (For Employed-Plain paper/ Self-Employed-Letterhead)
- Original updated Bank Statements with sufficient bank balance (last 6 months)
- Income Tax Returns/Form 16 for last 3 years
- Supporting Financial Documents such as Fixed Deposits, Property Investments, Other Investments etc. (Optional)
- Evidence of funds of at least NZ$ 1,000 per month for maintenance and accommodation, or NZ$ 400 per month if your accommodation has been prepaid. In the form of bank statements, saving books or fixed deposit certificates, or Completed sponsorship form INZ 1025 if your visit is being sponsored by a New Zealand citizen/resident.
Duration of stay
You can apply for another 3 months’ stay and extend your stay to 12 months in a 24-month period, if:
- you need more time to complete your tourist itinerary
- you can’t leave New Zealand for reasons beyond your control
- you’ve applied for residence for the first time
To apply for another 3 months’, stay, you must have financially supported yourself and not worked, studied or been sponsored during your stay.
If you’ve recently visited New Zealand for a total of 12 months, you have to remain outside New Zealand for 12 months before you can apply for another Visitor Visa.

The time taken to process your application can vary depending on:
- Fulfilment of the requirements of the New Zealand Immigration.
- The completeness of your application.
- Processing time can also depend upon how busy the New Zealand Embassy is.
