What is a UK Standard Visitor Visa ?
The Standard Visitor Visa or the UK Tourist Visa is a short-stay visa allowing an intending candidate to stay for up to 6 months in the UK.
It is mainly given to the people who travel to the United Kingdom on the purpose of tourism, visiting family friends, professional reasons, and medical treatments.
As per the UK government, the Standard Visitor visa has replaced these visas:
- Family Visitor visa
- General Visitor visa
- Child Visitor visa
- Business Visitor visa, including visas for academics, doctors and dentists
- Sports Visitor visa
- Entertainer Visitor visa
- Prospective Entrepreneur visa
- Private Medical Treatment Visitor visa
- Approved Destination Status (ADS) visa
Permissible activity under visit visa:
- For tourism for example on a holiday or vacation
- To see your family or friends
- To volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity
- To pass through the UK to another country (‘in transit’)
- For certain business activities, for example attending a meeting or interview
- To do a short course of study, a placement or to take an exam
- To take part in research or an exchange programme if you’re an academic
- For medical reasons or to donate an organ
Non - permissible activity under visit visa:
- Do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person
- Claim public funds (benefits)
- Live in the UK for long periods of time through frequent or successive visits
- Marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership - you’ll need to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa
Eligibility requirements:
You must show that:
- You’ll leave the UK at the end of your visit
- You’re able to support yourself and your dependants during your trip (or have funding from someone else to support you)
- You’re able to pay for your return or onward journey (or have funding from someone else to pay for the journey)
- You’ll not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home
You must have a passport or travel document that is valid for the whole of your stay in the UK.
You must also only plan to do activities in the UK that are allowed under the Standard Visitor rules.
List of Documents required for UK Visitor Visa
- The online form of UK Tourist Visa Application Form VAF1A.
- 2 recent photographs as per the guidelines of the UK government.
- Valid passport.
- Proof of funds to support the stay in the UK.
- Your last 10 years of travel history.
- Bio metric information.
- Letter of Invitation.
- Fee receipts.
- Your language skills certificate.
- Medical certificates, stating that you are fit to travel to the UK.

- Step 4: Gather all important documents to submit

Duration of stay:
You can stay for up to six months on this visa. You can extend your stay if you have come to the UK for private medical treatment by paying additional charges.
You can also extend your stay if you are in the country to attend an academic program
Processing time:
The decision on your UK Standard Visitor Visa should come within 3 weeks of attending the appointment at the Visa Application Centre. One week here is equal to 5 working days.
