What is GRE?
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) revised General Test is a test that’s a requirement for most of the masters abroad and doctoral degree programs in some top universities in the US, UK, Germany, and Canada. Educational Testing Service (ETS) develops and administers the exam.
Students take the GRE from all around the world in their native country. Many Universities require GRE as a criterion of qualification. They require a GRE general test for MS or Ph.D. in the top Universities overseas.
Currently, in this Pandemic, as many students were unable to take the test by going to the Prometric centre, ETS had shifted the GRE test to online mode. The GRE online mode is similar to that of offline mode
Who takes the GRE test?
Future graduate students, that’s who. Graduate programs use the GRE as an admissions metric for Master’s and Doctoral programs. This applies almost across the board, from the sciences to the humanities. And yes, you have to take all the sections, no matter what program you’re applying to (although STEM programs will usually not care much about your Verbal score, while humanities programs rarely worry about your Quant score).
What is the Eligibility for the GRE Exam?
Graduate Record Examination test is taken for admission to Graduate Programmes in most of the universities across the world. Candidates who wish to appear for GRE have to complete their undergraduate course successfully. A student can register for the exam irrespective of age and qualification. It is very important to note the fact that not all universities and all programmes require a GRE score for their Graduate Program. It is entirely dependent on the university whether a candidate requires to appear for his GRE exam.
For an applicant, it is always advised to apply before the priority deadline which increases your chances of admission at a particular university. For example- the best time to take the GRE for Fall 2018 is before September is before September 2017. Usually, the application season starts in September and October. It is always recommended to give GRE one year before applying.
GRE Test Sections
A candidate will receive three scores on the GRE exam:
- Analytical Writing
- Verbal Reasoning
- Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections of the GRE test are scored on a scale of 130 to 170. The mean score for Verbal Reasoning is 151, and the mean score for Quantitative Reasoning is 153. The Analytical Writing Assessment is scored from 0 to 6 in half-point increments, and the mean score is 4.0.
The GRE assesses your skills in three main areas: analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative writing. You will receive a score in each of these three areas.
- Analytical writing– this section of the test measures your critical thinking and writing skills. The GRE has one analytical writing section that comprises of two different writing tasks. You have 30 minutes to complete each task. Analytical writing is scored in half-point increments from 0 to 6.
- Verbal Reasoning– this part of the test measures your critical reading and analysis skills, as well as your ability to draw conclusions, summarize, and understand vocabulary. The GRE has two 30-minute verbal reasoning sections, each with 20 questions. Verbal reasoning is scored in one-point increments between 130 and 170.
- Quantitative Reasoning– quantitative reasoning questions measure your skills in problem-solving, data interpretation, algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. The GRE has two 35-minute quantitative reasoning sections, each with 20 questions. This part of the GRE is scored in one-point increments from 130 to 170.
What’s the cost of the GRE Exam?
The GRE cost is 205 US Dollars (this might vary based on the country) and needs to be given while booking the seat for your exam.
ETS also offers financial aid to students who prove economic hardship. The financial aid is a GRE fee waiver/fee reduction program wherein you will need to fill a Fee Reduction form and send a copy of your FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR). After you fill the form, you need to courier the report with the form and the next steps would be communicated by ETS.
How long is the GRE valid for?
ETS will keep your score on file for five years after your test administration date. Check with your chosen university to find out if they require test scores from within a certain period.
What are the preparation strategies for GRE?
Every person who takes the GRE has its own cool way to prepare for the test. But, here we will discuss the basic GRE preparation strategy to unleash your full potential for the best score.
First, you need to book a GRE date. We recommend you to book the GRE exam date 3-6 months prior to the exam date. The reason you need to do this is to set a goal and when there’s a deadline on your head, you work efficiently.
After booking the GRE exam date, take your first mock test for GRE with no preparation. This will help you know the sections you are weak and strong at.
Focusing on the weak sections for the initial months of preparation is a crucial part of GRE.
You can understand the concepts and learn for up to 2-4 hours per day. But remember, consistency is the key.
We’d recommend you to keep practicing both Verbal and Quants simultaneously.
This would not let your mind saturate because of studying just one thing.
Know about the AWA topics on the ETS website, practice it, and give it to someone else to test it in terms of vocabulary, narrative, sentence usage, etc.
