Is it Important to Apply for a UK Visa Before Your Graduation?

29Nov

Is it important to apply for a UK visa before your graduation? This question is often asked by students who are looking to study and work in the UK. There are two types of visas that you can apply for if you wish to stay in the UK after graduating from university: Tier 4 (General) and Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur).

Under the UK Immigration Rules, Tier 4 (General) students are able to make an application for a visa to remain in the UK after their studies as a Graduate Entrepreneur or a Tier 2 skilled worker.

Under the UK Immigration Rules, Tier 4 (General) students are able to make an application for a visa to remain in the UK after their studies as a Graduate Entrepreneur or a Tier 2 skilled worker.

A student can apply for this type of visa if they are studying full-time at an approved university or college in the United Kingdom and have been accepted into your course by 31st August each year. This means that you must apply before 1st September so that all paperwork is ready by then. You will also need to show evidence of funding support from your university or college because this will allow them to confirm how much money has been allocated towards tuition fees, living costs and other expenses related directly with your education programme.

If successful on its own merit alone (i.e., without needing any additional evidence), this formality could take less than 15 minutes! However, if there were any issues such as missing documents which needed correcting before submission then these could take longer depending on how busy it was during peak periods such as Christmas/New Year holidays when many offices tend not open until later hours due either religious significance associated with certain days/events etcetera.

The Tier 4 (General) category is designed for those who wish to study at further, or higher education institutions in the UK.

The Tier 4 (General) category is designed for those who wish to study at further, or higher education institutions in the UK. You can apply for this visa if you are 18 years or older and you have been accepted by a university or college to study a degree level course.

To qualify under this category, applicants must also:

  • Have completed secondary education (or equivalent) up until the age of 17 years; and
  • Be able to prove that they intend to stay in the UK during their studies by providing evidence from an international school certificate showing that they passed their exams at least two years prior to applying for their visa

You can only do this if you have been sponsored by an approved education provider who has assigned you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

You can only do this if you have been sponsored by an approved education provider who has assigned you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

A CAS is a letter that confirms that you have been accepted to study at a UK university or college. The CAS will be issued by the university or college, so it’s important to check whether they are issuing one before applying for your Tier 4 visa.

There are three routes that students who graduate from a UK higher education provider can take if they wish to remain in the UK and work, these are explained on the UKCISA website.

There is no limit on how many times you may apply for an extension of your leave to remain or work permit. If you want to study at another institution, you will need to reapply for permission each time.

When you complete your degree, you may wish to apply for Tier 2 sponsorship from an employer rather than going into further education.

If you are working in the UK and wish to remain in the country after completing your degree, then it is possible for you to apply for Tier 2 sponsorship. This will allow you to stay here even though there is no guarantee that your visa application will be successful.

You can apply for a Tier 2 visa if:

  • You have completed an English language course;
  • You have been offered employment by an employer with a salary of at least £20,800 per year; and
  • Your job must be in one of the following sectors: science/engineering; healthcare support workers (skilled nursing); engineering apprenticeships; teaching assistantships

One route that international students can take after graduating from university is the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) category.

One route that international students can take after graduating from university is the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) category. The Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) scheme, which was launched by the UK government in 2010 and has been revised several times since then, allows foreign nationals who have completed their studies in a high-level course at an approved university or college in the UK to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR).

Applicants must meet certain criteria before they can be granted ILR:

  • They must have been resident here for two years prior to applying for it;
  • They must have sufficient funds available; and/or
  • They are able to show evidence of their entrepreneurial skills through evidence such as business plans or websites that demonstrate their potential as entrepreneurs

Please note that you must have sponsorship from an approved body in order to apply under this scheme, such as your institution or a local business organization.

  • The European Economic Area (EEA) is the area in which citizens of EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway can live and work freely. Citizens of other countries need to get permission from their own government before they can come here.

Another practical requirement of this route is that graduates must hold either £945.00 in funds or £1,890 if they are applying from overseas or £630 if they are applying in the UK and they should also be able to provide evidence of private medical insurance cover.

The main advantage of this route is that it allows students to study and work in the UK while not having to pay tax on their earnings – but there are some drawbacks as well: Students will not be eligible for student finance support from government and will have a limited amount of time before their visa expires (usually 12 months).

We hope this article has given you a better understanding of how to apply for an entry visa. Guide which contains more detailed information on all three routes available to international students who graduate from UK higher education providers.
